House of Wax (wool bases)
This colorway is a sinisterly subdued melding of pale buttered popcorn yellow and matte tan. It captures the unsettling stillness of wax figures, the dim glow of candlelight flickering over their lifeless expressions, and the claustrophobic warmth of a room slowly closing in with suffocating layers of molten wax.
🕯️ On superwash bases the definition comes through like the textured imperfections of a dripping wax
🕯️ On non-superwash bases it shifts into a brighter, eerily soft yellow-tan that conjures the unmistakable glow of an approaching inferno
“House of Wax” follows a group of friends whose road trip takes a deadly detour when their car breaks down near a seemingly deserted small town. They discover its main attraction is a massive, eerily lifelike wax museum…where the “figures” are actually a little too lifelike…
What begins as a pit stop quickly turns into a fight for their lives, as the quiet streets and smiling faces hide something far more sinister than they could have imagined.
While the original “House of Wax” (1953) has its own unique charm and stars the legendary Vincent Price, the 2005 remake is pure 2000s horror gold. Just the tagline for the film says it all, “See Paris Die!” says it all.
This movie is stylized, a little sleazy, and unexpectedly gnarly. It’s got that mid-2000s cast we all remember (hello Paris Hilton, Chad Michael Murray, Jared Padalecki, Elisha Cuthbert), and the wax aesthetic is so creepy and cool. There are some truly nail-biting scenes in this one too. I love how it leans into the era’s mix of teen horror, but with brutal, glossy visuals. It’s nostalgic, way better than people gave it credit for at the time, and ends with a shocking reveal that I just love, very reminiscent of a Hitchcock-ian twist.
