The Grandmother (1970) is one of David Lynch’s first films; it’s a very special and super surreal, atmospheric, and mostly silent experimental 33 minute film that tells the story of a young boy trapped in an abusive, loveless home. Isolated and desperate for kindness, he plants a mysterious seed that grows into a living grandmother…a figure of warmth and protection in an otherwise brutal environment. 🫂
Using a mix of live-action and unsettling animation, Lynch crafts a nightmarish vision of childhood trauma, but within the darkness, he fosters a fragile sense of hope: the idea that even in the most desolate circumstances, something nurturing and good can still take root. 🥹
