This colorway is paying homage to one of my newfound favorite films, one that I was so happy I could see in the theater recently: David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart.” This solid gold crime romance tells the story of Sailor (Nicolas Cage) and Lula (Laura Dern), young lovers on the run from a world twisted by violence, obsession, and fear.
“Wild at Heart” is truly one of David Lynch’s most special and well-written films, with dialogue that feels so unique and real, yet still includes many hilarious lines that linger on long after the scene ends. This film really does a beautiful job blurring the line between reality and fantasy, creating a world that feels both vivid and dreamlike; something we wanted to capture in a yarn colorway too.
The film is also rich with “Wizard of Oz” symbolism — from references to the Wicked Witch to Lula wearing familiar ruby red slippers. In one scene, Sailor says, “Too bad he couldn’t visit that old Wizard of Oz and get some good advice,” to which Lula replies, “Too bad we all can’t, baby.”
In one of the most memorable scenes of the film, after the couple becomes separated, Sailor is visited by a dreamy vision of Glinda the Good Witch (played by Laura Palmer herself, Sheryl Lee), who gives him hope in the midst of chaos, reminding him, “Lula loves you. Don’t turn away from love, Sailor.” 🫧🦢
